Every society has its own history, culture and tradition, China’s history is amongst the best. Let us look at the history of Chinese mask. Shanbangiao Culture Museum welcomes you to share the interesting history of Chinese mask with you.

China has a rich and colorful cultural history, and masks have played a major role in Chinese tradition for thousands of years. Chinese masks, depending on their function, are divided into several different categories, such as sorcerers' masks, Tibetan masks, shaman masks and theatrical masks.

Sorcerers' mask

Shaman mask

Today, masks continue to be of great artistic and entertainment value. Also, Chinese masks have become highly desired items by collectors worldwide.

The first Chinese masks were made about 3,500 years ago as part of shamanism, or religious healing. Masks have played an integral role in many rituals, such as worshiping the god that destroys pestilence and grants blessings. They also have a long history in the arts, particularly dance and opera. Today, masks continue to be worn for religious ceremonies, life events such as weddings and funerals, and world renowned cultural events.

Masks that are believed to be chasing away ghosts and evil spirits

About a thousand years ago in the central plains of China, cultures used masks for exorcising, or driving away evil spirits. The masks were also worn to celebrate births and to keep homes safe by scaring evil ghosts. This culture, located in the southern portions of the Yangtze River, was combined exorcism along with totem worship.

Shanbangiao Culture Museum is proud to share such an interesting history to you.

What an amazing campsite, I have never seen.

Are you familiar with outings and camping? People go camping for many reasons, although many people see in camping a chance to get out of the daily routine and improve their survival skills, others would rather benefit from the many amenities that campsites are nowadays equipped with. If a few decades ago camping meant a great deal of responsibility and knowledge about wild nature, today any individual who wants to spend a weekend away in the woods may also expect a high level of comfort. Shanbangiao recreation farm is a good camping site for tourists.

These are pictures showing tourists setting up their camping tents at Shanbangiao Recreational farm camping site.

Some campers have a range of comforts available to them, whether their shelter is a tent or a recreational vehicle. Those choosing to camp closer to their car (car camping) with a tent may have access to potable hot water, tent interior lighting and fans, and other technological changes to camping gear. And those who do not have recreational vehicles are provided with electricity, bathrooms, toilets and every camping square have water sink provided for campers. It may also depend from campers whether or not to bring their own food as the farm provide food for campers, breakfast, lunch and dinner, all they have to do is to place an order.

The Mask Museum is geared towards the do it yourself (DIY) experience. There are hundreds of masks on display, although you can only choose out of a few dozen to actually paint.

Everybody try to make their own Face Painting

First, you have to trace the design on to the wood using carbon paper. Then you can start painting. Guided tours are available (in Chinese) which give a good understanding into how the masks are designed. As the mask covers the actors face, the colors and designs used replace facial emotions and express what kind of character the wearer is.

They also have a small do it yourself (DIY) area where you can try your hand at painting your own mask or beautification. The jing hang roles or painted faces are all male characters.

Different Face have different mean

Actors playing jing roles have their faces painted in special designs. The parts played by jing actors are mostly unusual individuals with highly pronounced personalities; they may be particularly rough and crude, supremely honest and upright, evil and fiendishly cunning, or very simple and straightforward. In every case, they are larger than life individuals.

Dan hang mean the actors who perform female characters, usually the female lead; they normally wear white and red face makeup. Dan hang are separated according to age, persona and facial make up into many of classes, including old woman, demure woman, coquettish woman, comic female lead, female warrior, women skilled in the martial arts. With the exception of actors playing lao dan roles.

The duties played by the actors have a highly symbolic character; skilled construal by the actors is needed to really bring each role across to the audience. The roles represent the types of person appearing in the opera, and their special characteristics. To play a particular role, actors need a particular form of artistic skill, and having this skill defines the actor’s status within the troupe.

Chinese Opera is an all-inclusive stage art. It consolidates the elements of literature, music, dancing, martial arts, and fine arts. In terms of the vision effect presented to the audience, Painted Face, which is a fundamental constituent of performance, displays the style and characteristics of various roles and setting in the opera.

Painted Face is one of the vibrant elements which receive attention from the audience. For the traditional Chinese opera, the portrayal of roles is considered as the key aspect during the whole performance. It involved the dressing of head and face, and costumes. Painted Face is a component of the dressing of face, playing an important role in the depiction of character. The museum has a big and well adorned hall; since 2006, the museum has been gradually localized.

Use traditional musical instruments to entertain the audience
